Final Show
It was interesting to see this email from
Martin Parr himself about our Degree show in London.
This comment stuck with me.
‘I
say the same thing every time, the London show idea is passed its sell by date,
so if you were to suggest a more interesting way of getting your work out, I
maybe inclined to support it”
Although this was a disappointing
response in terms of the degree show Martin's comment supports the concept of
my individual project. The concept behind my project originates from trying to
find a more interesting output for my own work rather than confined to a framed
print in a gallery.
Altough the themes of my work rebel against a gallery setting
I still want my project to be included in the
final show at Sion Hill as well as in London. I can still get this point across by using the space and my images in a way that defies the norm.
I printed one of my images large scale on
49 pages of A3 paper. When focusing on my project in the context of the final
show I want my submission to be geared towards an immersive experience.
The concept for this piece is that the
image will be stuck to the floor as shown. Attendees will be able to walk over
the work which will cause the image to become dirty, ripped and ‘ruined’.
I chose this image in particular for a number of
reasons. Compositionally the texture
works well displayed on the floor, the content of the image is a frozen
waterfall so attendees will be essentially ‘walking on Ice’.
There's been a big media presence and
social uproar about climate change leading to protests around the world like
“youth strike 4 climate change” I'm hoping these current events will influence
the perception of the piece
The audience will be responsible for
destroying the piece if they choose to step on it just as humans are
responsible for climate change so I'm hoping these external factors will
influence perception of the piece.
