Night Shoot: 5th November 2016

This evening myself and course-mate Danny walked up to Alexandra Park to shoot the fireworks that were being set off from the Rugby Stadium. Alexandra Park has a great view across the city of Bath so we were a able to watch fireworks being set off all over the city. I packed me Camera, tripod and spare battery.
Before the shoot we had a look round to see if we could purchase sparklers to experiment with however everywhere we went had sold out. I haven't shot at night much before so I wasn't confident in the shoot being a success. When we arrived the location was already busy but we found a good space. I tried using my tripod however due to the amount of people, uneven ground and darkness I found it more productive to do freehand, Obviously the quality of my images would potentially be lower doing it this way but I settled on shooting at 1/25sec F: 4.5 ISO1600 this gave a decently lit city space with focal points such as the Train Station, Abbey and Rugby Stadium being visible without camera shake.

I also experimented by changing to a longer shutter-speed and holding the camera as still as I could this obviously made the city a lot brighter which I kind of like, I regret not giving the tripod a chance as I reckon I could have got some nice shots.
Considering I was shooting the fireworks this wasn't a major hindrance though as the darker the city the more impacting the fireworks will be.
>1024 sec; f/4.5; ISO1600

I used the bulb shutter speed setting to experiment with the city lights to create some interesting (but predictable) light trails.

I also changed the white balance to monotone which I liked the effect of.

when I got home I did some post editing for the intention of Instagram i added an dust overlay to give a subtle disposable film effect and used multiple layers to get the lighting of the buildings and fireworks to something i was happy with.
After this i created the first image of this blog post which took around an hour and involved making a composite of 10 images and placing them around the city scape. It was a nice change and a good experience to experiment with this type of photography and I look forward to hopefully progressing with it in the future.
