What Is Copyright?
It’s a collection of rights
An authors right, a property right and and incentive to create
An exclusive right, the owner has the right to grant permissions of use.
Copy right is a human right, it is in the human rights act.
Article 27 of the declaration of Human Rights states that:
1: Everyone has the right to freely participate in the culture of the community, too enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits
2: everyone has the right to protection of the moral and material interests resulting from any scientific, literary or artistic production of which he is the author.
Verbal agreements are a contract but very hard to prove: follow up with email.

Differentiation between copyrights and usage rights

Unless you give away copyrights they last your whole lifetime and 70 years after your lifetime.
